Artistic Tuesday: White Space
Every other Tuesday, I post an art prompt to spark a little bit of inspiration for your creativity. These posts are versatile and can be applied to a variety of creative mediums. Whether you enjoy digital art or acrylic painting (or anything in between like tags, digital art, mixed media, etc), these fun prompts will help you generate ideas for a new project, or maybe add a fun spin to a current project.
For this week, we are going to use 'white space' as inspiration.
In artwork, the concept of "white space" refers to the areas within a composition that are devoid of any elements or visual content. Also known as "negative space," these spaces serve several essential purposes in enhancing the overall aesthetic and balance of a piece:
1) Emphasis:
White space helps draw attention to the primary subject or focal point by creating contrast and separation from other elements.
2) Balance and harmony:
By providing breathing room around objects, white space contributes to the overall balance and harmony within a composition, preventing it from appearing cluttered or overwhelming.
3) Visual flow:
White space can guide the viewer's eye, allowing for a more effortless and engaging exploration of the artwork.
4) Depth and perspective:
Skillful use of white space can create the illusion of depth and perspective, adding dimension to an otherwise flat piece.
Utilizing white space inside a piece of artwork creates contrast and draws the viewers eye to a certain busy focal point, which creates a memorable visual impact.
Directions: It may sound daunting, but in order to create white space in your composition, just make sure you leave lots of empty space! Try to leave at least 2/3 of your canvas/image void of anything. Hence, the empty 'white' space. Cluster your main images and ideas in one small section of the canvas and leave the rest relatively blank. The twist is, I want you to also add a quote or saying near your focal point.
This prompt is for any art medium or style.
My challenges and prompts are not interactive. You don't have to come back to link up. No comments are required, just your creativity!
