A Self-Portrait in Words

Each Saturday, I will provide you with a thought-provoking journal-writing prompt.  These weekly prompts will include a specific topic or question that will encourage you to explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. These prompts can be answered as is,  or they may simply serve as a starting point for a larger or more formal piece of writing.  So long as you write something in response, anything goes.  But, in giving yourself a specific focus, you can delve deeper into your writing and uncover new insights on various topics!  Feel free to personalize the prompt and make it your own.

This week I want to focus on the idea of the 'self-portrait.'

When you hear the words 'self-portrait,' you probably automatically think of photography, a painting, or artwork of some medium.   However, today we are going to use words as our medium and express what our self-portrait would be in writing.  Thing of this sort of as painting via the written word.

Use these questions as starting points for your journal entry:

1)  You can start with the basics.  Physically, how do you see yourself?  Describe your physical characteristics, the shape of your face and the color of your eyes?  Elaborate...do you have your grandmothers smile, your mothers nose?  Write about it.

2)  How do you see yourself metaphorically?  Are you a queen, a boss, a bookworm, an artist, an old soul?  Explain why you see yourself this way.  Whatever role you chose, explain what that role entails, what type of person does that make you?  And why?

3)  Go deeper.  What type of person are you at the core of your personality?  What are your most defining characteristics?  What details of you really make you who you are?  What makes you an individual? What makes you stand out in a crowd?

4)  Analyze yourself.  What are the best characteristics about yourself?  What about yourself are you most proud of?  And do you have any character flaws?  Is there anything about yourself that you would like to change or improve?

5)  Be creative.  Imagine you are looking at a self-portrait painting of yourself.  What are you wearing?  Is it an acrylic painting or a vintage style ink portrait? Is your portrait black and white or in full color?  And how do these colors portray you as a person?

Take one of the prompts, or use them all.  Or, merely use the word 'self-portrait' and free associate across the empty page.  You may also derive inspiration from the art images.  So long as your 'self-portraiting' in words, anything goes!

My challenges and prompts are not interactive.  You don't have to come back to link up.  No comments are required, just your creativity!
