Naming the Sky

Every Tuesday, I post an art prompt to spark a little bit of inspiration for your creativity. These posts are versatile and can be applied to a variety of creative mediums. Whether you enjoy digital art or acrylic painting (or anything in between like tags, mixed media, collage, etc), these fun prompts will help you generate ideas for a new project, or maybe add a fun spin to a current project.

For this week, we are going to use the idea of naming the sky as our inspiration.

The Prompt: Use the statement "this one is mine, and I will name it" as inspiration for creating an art piece. Every constellation we know was invented by somebody who looked up and decided a scatter of stars was a hunter, a swan, a spilled cup. This week, invent your own. It could be shaped like a kitchen chair, a dog you lost, a pair of open hands, a sewing needle, a whale, a house you grew up in, or something with no shape at all except the feeling it gives you. Let your interpretation lead you. Make sure your artwork includes a pattern of points connected by lines — the bones of a constellation, however loosely drawn — and for a creative twist, work its name into the piece itself: handwritten in the margin, stamped, collaged from cut letters, scratched into paint, hidden somewhere only a close look will find.

Nobody has to agree with you about what's up there. That's rather the point.
