The Songs That Followed You Home

Each Saturday, I share a thought-provoking journal-writing prompt here on the blog. These weekly prompts offer a specific topic or question to encourage you to explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. You can answer them exactly as they're written, or let them serve as a starting point for a larger, more formal piece of writing. So long as you write something in response, anything goes. But by giving yourself a specific focus, you can delve deeper into your writing and uncover new insights along the way. Feel free to personalize the prompt and make it entirely your own.

This week, I want to write about music.

Every life has a soundtrack, and none of us chose ours on purpose. Songs attach themselves to us the way burrs attach to a hem—we walk through a summer, a heartbreak, a long drive, a kitchen where someone was always singing, and we come out the other side carrying music we'll never be able to set down. Three notes and you're seventeen again. A chorus drifts out of a grocery store speaker and suddenly you're standing in the cereal aisle with your eyes stinging, and the poor person restocking the shelves has no idea. This week, let's write about the songs that followed us home.

Use these questions as starting points for your journal entry:

Start with the earliest. What's the first song you can remember? Not the first one you liked—the first one you knew. A hymn, a lullaby, a jingle, something on a car radio. Who was singing it, or playing it, or humming it under their breath? Write the room that song lives in.

Score a season. Choose one distinct chapter of your life—a year, a summer, a hard winter—and name the song that belongs to it. Then write about that season and let the song be your guide. What were you wearing, worrying about, hoping for? Why do you think that particular song stuck?

Approach the one you avoid. Most of us have a song we skip. Too many memories in it, or the wrong person's fingerprints. What's yours, and what happens in your body when you hear the opening notes? You don't have to play it. Just write about why you don't.

Honor the one that carried you. Now the opposite: a song that got you through. The one you played on repeat until the words wore smooth, the one that felt like it had been written by someone who'd read your mind. What did it say that you needed to hear? Who were you when you found it?

Compose this week's track. If someone scored the life you're living right now—this season, these days, this exact version of you—what would be playing? Choose a real song or invent one: give it a title, a tempo, an instrument, a mood. Then write about what that choice reveals about where you are.

Take one of these prompts, or weave them all together. Or simply put on the first song that comes to mind, let it play through once, and write whatever it dredges up. You might let the art images guide you, too. So long as you're writing your way through the music, anything goes.

My challenges and prompts are not interactive. You don't have to come back to link up. No comments are required—just your creativity. 🌻
