The Trees Don't Apologize for Changing

A Little Fall Reminder for the Rest of Us

Every autumn, the trees perform this spectacular act of letting go.

And they don't seem particularly upset about it.

They don't cling desperately to July because July was good.

They don't look at the tree across the street and think, She's turning red faster than I am. I really need to get my life together.

They don't apologize for changing colors.

They don't wonder whether becoming something different will disappoint everyone who liked them better in green.

They simply change.

And maybe there's something in that for us.

🍂 You Are Allowed to Outgrow Things

There are versions of ourselves that once fit perfectly.

Old routines.

Old dreams.

Old friendships.

Old clothes.

Old beliefs.

Old ways of spending our time.

Even old ideas about what a happy life was supposed to look like.

We sometimes keep carrying these things simply because they once belonged to us.

But once is not the same thing as still.

You are allowed to look at something you desperately wanted five years ago and realize you don't want it anymore.

You are allowed to discover that your idea of success has changed.

You are allowed to become quieter.

Or louder.

More creative.

More private.

More adventurous.

More selective about who gets your time.

You are allowed to decide that the life everyone else thinks you should want isn't actually the one that makes you happy.

Changing your mind doesn't mean the old version of you was wrong.

She simply brought you this far.

☕ Maybe Your Life Doesn't Need to Get Bigger

We live in a culture that loves more.

More money.

More followers.

More accomplishments.

More productivity.

More things.

More plans.

More people.

But fall doesn't feel like a season of more.

It feels like a season of enough.

One warm cup of coffee.

One good book.

One person you can really talk to.

One pot of soup simmering on the stove.

One afternoon with nowhere you need to be.

One little creative project that nobody is paying you to make.

One home that feels peaceful when you close the door.

Maybe abundance isn't having everything.

Maybe abundance is finally noticing that some of what you already have is wonderful.

🍁 Let Something Fall Away

I think we tend to imagine personal growth as adding things.

New habits.

New goals.

New routines.

New skills.

New versions of ourselves.

But sometimes growth looks like subtraction.

Maybe this fall you don't need another challenge.

Maybe you need to stop doing something that makes you miserable.

Maybe you need fewer obligations.

Maybe you need to stop explaining yourself to someone determined to misunderstand you.

Maybe you need to unsubscribe.

Unfollow.

Declutter.

Say no.

Rest.

Maybe there is something you've been carrying simply because you've carried it for so long that you've forgotten putting it down is an option.

Ask yourself:

What am I ready to stop carrying?

You don't have to announce the answer.

You don't even have to know exactly what comes next.

Leaves don't wait until they have a five-year plan before they fall.

📚 Become Interested in Your Own Life Again

When was the last time you were genuinely curious about yourself?

Not critical.

Not analyzing everything you're doing wrong.

Just curious.

What books do you like now?

What music makes you feel something?

What colors are you drawn to?

What would you make if nobody ever saw it?

Where would you go on a completely free afternoon?

What do you want your home to feel like?

What makes you lose track of time?

What kind of people leave you feeling peaceful rather than exhausted?

What would you learn simply because you're fascinated by it?

We spend so much of adulthood becoming who we need to be for everyone else that sometimes we forget we're still a person worth discovering.

Maybe this fall you can meet yourself again.

🎨 Make Things That Don't Need a Purpose

Make art nobody buys.

Write something nobody reads.

Bake bread even though the grocery store sells it for three dollars.

Take pictures you'll never post.

Decorate a journal nobody else will see.

Press leaves between the pages of a book.

Make a playlist with an embarrassingly dramatic title.

Draw badly.

Write bad poetry.

Try a recipe.

Paint something strange.

Make something simply because your hands wanted to make it.

Not everything you love needs to become productive.

You don't have to turn every talent into income.

You don't have to build a brand around every interest.

You don't have to become particularly good at something before you're allowed to enjoy it.

Creativity can simply be one of the ways you spend your life.

That is purpose enough.

🌙 Protect Some Quiet

There is something about autumn evenings that makes quiet feel especially sacred.

The sky gets dark earlier.

The house feels warmer.

The outside world begins retreating.

Let yourself retreat a little too.

Turn your phone over.

Light a candle.

Put on comfortable clothes.

Read.

Journal.

Make something.

Listen to an audiobook while you fold laundry.

Sit outside under the moon.

Drink something warm beside an open window while the air is still cool enough to enjoy.

You don't have to be available every minute simply because technology makes it possible.

Some parts of your life are allowed to belong only to you.

🧡 Stop Saving Your Life for Later

Use the good mug.

Burn the candle.

Wear the perfume.

Read the book.

Make the recipe.

Take yourself somewhere.

Start the journal.

Put fresh sheets on the bed on a random Wednesday.

Buy yourself the tiny pumpkin if it makes you ridiculously happy.

Take pictures of ordinary days.

There is no committee coming to declare that your life has officially become special enough for you to enjoy it.

This is it.

This strange Tuesday.

This cup of coffee.

This messy kitchen.

This rainy afternoon.

This version of you.

We spend so much time waiting for life to begin that we sometimes miss the fact that it already has.

🍂 You Don't Have to Bloom All Year

We talk a lot about blooming.

Bloom where you're planted.

Grow.

Flourish.

Become.

Achieve.

But nothing in nature blooms constantly.

There are seasons for flowers.

And there are seasons for roots.

There are seasons for reaching outward and seasons for coming home to yourself.

If you're in a quieter season, let it be quiet.

If you're rebuilding, rebuild.

If you're tired, rest.

If you're changing, change.

You don't have to produce visible evidence of growth every day.

Some of the most important things happening inside you may not look impressive from the outside.

🍁 Let This Fall Be Gentle

You don't need to reinvent yourself before winter.

You don't need a perfect morning routine.

You don't need fifty new goals.

You don't need to become somebody completely different.

Maybe you just need to become a little more comfortable being yourself.

Make your coffee.

Read your books.

Create your strange little art.

Cook something warm.

Call someone you love.

Walk underneath the changing trees.

Come home.

Light a candle.

Let your life become smaller in all the right places and richer in the ones that matter.

And when something inside you begins changing, don't immediately assume you need to stop it.

Look at the trees.

They've been doing this much longer than we have.

They don't apologize.

They don't ask permission.

They simply release what has finished being what it was—

and make room for whatever comes next.
